Ginetta G50 - Silverstone International

Silverstone

Preparations had been made for Silverstone and Chris was looking forward to learning another new track as he had only ever driven the Silverstone National Circuit in the Ginetta Junior Championship. Chris was quite pleased with the way testing had gone as he was 5th quickest on Saturday morning and was quickest through two out of three speedtraps.

Unfortunately as qualifying arrived the track conditions had changed and the track had warmed up and the rubber from earlier qualifying and races had been layed down. This caused the car to have too much rear end grip and the car understeered in the tight complexes. Chris qualified 12th which he found frustrating as he knew that he had drove better. His qualifying session was ended slightly early as he experienced brake fade going into Copse, Chris and the xero crew decided that it was too dangerous to continue.

Race 1

The Ginetta G50 Race was first thing on Sunday morning and the track was patchy and damp from the night before. This made the conditions very tricky as the whole field opted for slicks as the sun came out. The start was very cautious and Chris was feeling for the grip and testing the conditions, he had an early battle with the Colards Motorsport car of Mike Robinson but an early move going into Luffield so Chris through. Chris picked his way through slower cars and took advantage of people falling of the track. The braking issue in qualifying seemed to have been rectified and the field slowly spread out and after half and hour of slippy, tricky conditions Chris crossed the line in 7th place.

Race 2

The track had certainly dried out by the time Race 2 came around and Chris and the xero crew decided to change the set up of the car to relieve the understeer. It was a setup Chris had never tried before and in the first few opening laps it was very different to what he had tested before. As the race progressed Chris learnt to adapt to the setup change and he was slowely closing the gap to 9th and 8th that he had lost whilst learning and experiencing the new setup. There was unfortunately not enough time in the race to catch the group but Chris picked up two places towards the end after various incidents that had happened in the field and he ended the race in 8th. Chris commeneted afterwards "It has been a positive weekend and the race 2 setup certainly has potential and it grew on me much more towards the end as I could drive the car through the corners with the throttle more rather than steering it through which I felt was quicker. We will for sure be testing this setup and trying to optimise it."
